    I know this is an old video, but I just bought a small machine, and have been CNC machining and have done some conventional stuff. I just want to start off slowly, even if it's crafts and hobby items for people and sites like Xometry. I am going to do that, because I really don't want to finance anything, It'll take much longer, but I know how to program, and run the thing, and the day with automation I am hoping in 10-15 years, I can have a automation Okuma cell that I can run along with my 3-4 axis. Would that be better to do it, than having to hire people I know I could get a business loan, and potentially get that robotic Okuma cell in a few years, but I want to get the experience as a business woman, since I got the machining and programing experience with Mastercam, fusion. I'm just scared to fail, and I think it'll give me better time and even more machining experience.

    Great point, but I would also consider the fact that even if you own the building, you still need to pay taxes. Portion of your monthly rent is going to something you would have to pay regardless of owning the building or not. Additionally if you are a growing shop, you have the flexibility to move into a larger space. Probably the best setup would be to build a workshop on your personal property on land that has lower value outside a city. Then again access to 3 phase power then becomes the issue. Good video topic.

Trying to start my own shop from nothing, and it’s hard this video has helped but I’m still lost on how I can find customers to cold call, to get things going. I’m hoping by winter I’ve got at least 2 customers I can be turning parts for

    I was watching a newbie trying to indicate his vise, kind of watching over his shoulder for a good 20 minutes. What drew my attention was the banging he was doing with his deadblow. Finally I came over and asked if he wanted help. Turns out he was trying to dial in his vise while both sides were tightened, smacking the shit out of it and then moving to the opposite side and repeating. After asking him wtf he was doing he told me our supervisor had told him to do it that way. Needless to say I felt really underpaid after learning what a dumbass my supervisor is.

    You didn't mention the work stop that is in the kit. It's mounted on the right side just behind the handle. This work stop fits in the groove on the top of the rear clamping surface. It's small, easy to miss if you are not looking for it.

    I just got a "new to me" milltronics partner 3D running Cinturion V and I have only used it in in JOG lol. I noticed in the software it had DNC listed. I'm hoping that means I can use some software and drip feed into this old 3 axis. I'd love to see this thing cut using all auto generated g-code.

    To add on to my previous comment this goes for all aspects of running any business. If your business is selling paint and you have poor lighting because it was cheaper you will end up with unhappy customers that complain the product looked different than advertised.

    always always always buy once cry once. I am trying to beat that into my bosses head right now. He keeps picking up Shars calipers and what not. Well the Shars calipers last 6 months before they are junk, my Starrett dial caliper is 10 years old and still functions as if it was brand new. If he would just spend the money on quality tools he would save in the long run.

    If you had to estimate what China or whatever country with very cheap labour is charging as a shop rate for their machines what would it be? Like for a 3 axis mill or 2 axis lathe. I realise their employees earn bugger all but I wonder what the machine rate is approximately.

    • @LetsMachine
      @LetsMachine 3 года назад

      To be honest, I have no idea at present and it would definitely depend on the size of the job - small shops probably aren’t doing stuff for export so I don’t know what the local rates are, large shops / factories twenty years ago were paying essentially slave wages compared to here - I would estimate 5 years ago that $15 - 20 an hour would be a high estimate for production stuff, but these days I do hear it is getting more expensive

    Looks great, nice job. Used to do something similar on our Wire, we have a Fanuc W1, and sometimes with deep slots like that a WEDM is really useful. I know it's slow but you can always go and do something else while it is running to offset the time. I don't have powered Z though, would really like to have that option.
